Each September, the National Day of Service and Remembrance reminds us that remembrance can also inspire action. It is a time to honor lives lost, recognize the power of people coming together, and reflect on how each of us can help strengthen our communities.
But service shouldn’t end when the day does.
At Project I Am, we believe service is more than a single event or designated day on the calendar. It is a mindset and one of the most powerful ways we can show people that they are seen, valued, and supported.
That belief has been at the heart of Project I Am since our founder, Jahkil Jackson, began serving people experiencing homelessness as a young child. At just 8 years old, he turned that desire to help into Project I Am and its signature Blessing Bags. More than a decade later, that small beginning has grown into a movement that has impacted more than 250,000 people and engaged more than 3,000 young changemakers in service.
The lesson remains simple:
You don’t have to solve the entire problem to be part of the solution.
Service can look different for everyone. It can mean volunteering, mentoring a younger student, helping a neighbor, collecting needed items, supporting a local organization, or simply recognizing a need in your community and deciding to do something about it.
Days like the National Day of Service and Remembrance give us a reason to pause and reflect. What matters next is what we do with that reflection.
As September continues, we challenge you to find one way to serve. Invite your family, classmates, coworkers, or friends to join you. And when the month ends, keep going.
Because communities don’t only need us on designated days of service. They need people willing to show up all year long.
Start where you are. Use what you have. And Don’t Wait to Be Great.
